Field Trip to Sugar River Forest Preserve 8:15 am
EXPLORING THE SUGAR RIVER FOREST PRESERVE

Join us as we explore the Sugar River Forest Preserve, one of the most scenic places in Winnebago County. Its 529 acres comprise one of the most serene and unspoiled spots in northern Illinois. The beautiful Sugar River (“sweet water”, the name given by the native people) flows through this quiet preserve. We will explore the sand prairie bluffs, woodlands and wetlands, finding unique flora and fauna of this sandy region, and also hear tales of its history.
The group will stop along the way to listen to bird song, ripples of the river, and the “silence” that can occur in nature. The walk will be on a firm sandy soil trail with just a few small hills. Yes, sometimes the Sugar River has some mosquitoes bigger than hummingbirds, but let’s hope it is an off year. Still, be ready for the squadron
We’ll carpool from the Harbor Freight east parking lot at 8:15 a.m., and meet at the preserve’s Riverview Shelter House.
Wear long sleeves, long pants and a hat. Bring insect repellent, binoculars and, if desired, a water bottle.
