Please join us for a discussion of “The Ministry for the Future” by Kim Stanley Robinson on September 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Higher Grounds in Freeport.

“The Ministry for the Future” is a thought-provoking climate fiction novel that weaves together policy, global finance, and environmentalism.

Robinson’s narrative spans multiple perspectives from policymakers to climate refugees to guerilla activists, providing a comprehensive view of the climate crisis and potential solutions.

A book review by Miche Lozano, Program and Communication Assistant for the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club offers the following summary: “Set in the near future, the novel portrays a world where climate change has reached a tipping point, necessitating radical and sometimes ethically dubious-decisions.

Through a blend of essays and first-person accounts, readers experience the unfolding crisis from multiple perspectives: victims, bystanders, and those spearheading change.”

This is a rather long and somewhat complex science fiction novel. If you don’t have time to read the book or only read a portion, please join us anyway. We will summarize the book and the problems and possible solutions outlined, which are intriguing and provide food for thought.

Interestingly, The Ministry for the Future was officially selected by Barack Obama as one of his favorite books for 2020.
